The initial model - overview

Now to the model we use as the initial model.

The model consists of three domains. Each of these domains is covered in depth in 3 separate articles. To give an overview we will briefly explain the domains here.

  • Model for business process.
The first step to establish is a model for how the organization does business process modeling. The model or tool itself is indifferent however there are 4 basic requirements to the model that must be fulfilled. It is important to notice that we must agree upon how we model business processes. The objective is not to model the business processes – which is a far more comprehensive task.
  • Map of services.
In this domain we have to agree upon how we map the services within the organization. Unlike the business process we will do the mapping if the initial services as well. Reasons for this are; it’s easily done, it supports making the model accessible to the organization and it unifies and consolidates the way of reasoning.
  • Infrastructure.
After having agreed upon how the business processes are modeled and the boundaries of the services we can establish the requirements for domain of the SOA infrastructure.

The above three domains are all mutual dependant. You cannot proceed before the three domains as well as the mapping/relations between them are understood.

During the articles

we will go into the depth with each domain elaborating on them as well as giving examples of typical findings.

It is our suggestion – and experience - that these 3 domains and their internal mappings are the fundamental pillars of any EA framework. When an organization starts out by grasping hold of these fundamentals they’re pretty well of in growing their own enterprise architecture.

On to Modelling the business processes.
